Power-Loop Layout: Input Capacitors, Ground Return and Placement
A TI-source-based checklist for the power-loop information to align before a switching-power layout review.
Details
Back to listIdentify high-current loops first
TI notes that physical distance between input capacitors, power devices, magnetic components and output capacitors changes parasitics. A layout discussion should identify the main power and return loops first.
Discussion checklist
- Relative position of input capacitors and VIN or PGND
- Loops involving inductor, switch node and output capacitor
- Relationship of power ground, signal ground and sensitive signals
Engineering material
Provide the power topology, key device information, input and output conditions, and known EMI or thermal constraints for the next layout review.
