Start with project information

A project can start with its intended use, objectives, functional boundary, available materials and open items. These inputs establish relationships among later schematic, PCB, BOM, assembly and verification materials.

Package and revision relationships

IPC-2581 relates engineering data, BOM, history records and manufacturing, assembly and inspection information in one manufacturing-description framework. A handoff should identify the current revision and source of each file type.

From trace planning to circuit board component layout

Solution design

The solution stage aligns mechanical constraints, power, interfaces, acquisition, control logic and material boundaries as reviewable design inputs. Each open item should retain an owner and conclusion instead of remaining implicit in conversation.

Production and verification handoff

  • Align the revisions of schematic, PCB, BOM, assembly and test materials
  • State assembly orientation, polarity, connectors, special process and inspection requirements
  • Define functional-test inputs, expected results and recording method

Assembly production and delivery

After the revision and manufacturing conditions are confirmed, the project can move into assembly production and delivery. Quantity, deliverables and change records should remain tied to the corresponding design revision.
